The "N" Word

I despise it, I do not use it and I hate to hear people around me using it. But most of the time I deal - because who am I to tell grown men and women what they can/cannot say?

I won’t lie though, I used to use the word. But about 4 years ago, after accepting how ignorant is was, especially coming from someone who was originally the target of the word (a/er - it’s really all the same), I made it one of my New Year’s resolutions to completely remove it from my speech.

"Not Judging"

My little sister, Sidney is notorious for that phrase. And she and my baby sister, Lindsay had no shame when they snapped pictures of me passed out (fully clothed) on my Mom’s armchair/ottoman the night my brother and I made it to Florida. Don’t worry, they don’t discriminate - they got him, too. I come from a family of pranksters, as you can see.

We flew in on Monday night to spend the week (and of course, Thanksgiving) with them. I’m really excited because this is my first year spending the holiday with my Mom since she moved to Florida and my first year cooking any kind of dish for T-Day. On the low, my ‘cheffery’ is on point so I’m looking forward to surprising the family - especially since this is potentionally my last Thanksgiving in the states for a couple years.

Stay tuned for photos and vids from the trip, =).

Ever forward,

H.Oh

P.S - Had a great time in Boston. Headed back at the end of January with a few of my favorite people, <3.

"Are you gonna wipe her tears?"

…says my 3 year old niece to my 7 year old niece this afternoon after tearing the paper boat she’d made in school and sending her into the emotional breakdown.

That kid is hilarious, man. It took a lot for me to hold that laugh in. Not long before that incident, she managed to spill an entire bottle of tea tree oil on the living room table and floor and commended me on how good of a job I was doing while I cleaned up her mess, smh. Lmao, she’s quite an awesome little 3 year old.

They live in the Bronx; my older sister, brother-in-law and three nieces. I’m a bit of deadbeat when it comes to spending time with loved ones (and anyone other than myself, for that matter) so since I started the application process, I’ve been making a really conscious effort to spend time with them. I’m the most social recluse I know. I honestly believe that I was a ninja in a former life.

I usually spend Sunday afternoons with them but I opted to pick them up from school today since I’m headed to Boston for the weekend and won’t be in town at all next week. They’re really great kids. Well-mannered, well-behaved, really smart and fun. Managed to sneak a little footage when I scooped them from school, too.

I’m gonna miss them.

"You can't live in here, so you gotta die."

One of the residents at the elderly home where I volunteered yesterday afternoon shouted this out during a game of Bingo. I couldn’t imagine being reduced to that  feeling but it sounds like it sucks, majorly.

That outburst, however, inspired my first entry.

I was truly humbled amidst the arthritic hands and unrecognizable speech and could only hope that my final days wouldn’t be spent in a home for the aged. I started to think about the similarities between infancy and elderly - the level of dependency that each stage demands. I’m happy that I was there to be that crutch, even if it just meant helping a man mark off his score card.
