My good friend Los put me on to King Mez about two years ago. I was impressed then but now, I’m blown away. When you’re really invested and passionate about what you’re doing - whether it’s baking, writing, sewing or in this case, rapping - it’s sometimes astounding how much you’ll grow and improve over time. This dude continues to raise the bar.
Yesterday, Mez released his new album, My Everlasting Zeal, for free. I have this habit of listening to music while I read and normally, I can do it with ease, bob to the music and still grasp both the literary and musical content. Not this time. I was riding the 4 train into the city to teach last night and caught myself pausing my iPod to put my NOOK away so I could give the project my full attention. And yes, it was that good.
The confidently honed flow. The distinct voice. The lyrical prowess. The content that explores a world beyond jewels and cars. The well-crafted hooks that you’re singing along with by the second time they come around. And production that compliments it all (including contributions from Commissioner Gordon, Omen and J. Cole).
The Town (embedded above) is one of my favorites so far. Download the full offering here and let me know what you guys think.
Enjoy!
